PhD position in Formal Philosophy at the University of Gdańsk

The Institute of Philosophy, Sociology and Journalism at the University of Gdańsk invites applications for one doctoral position. First 12 months of funding start with October 2018, with the possibility of subsequent year-long extensions (conditional upon satisfactory progress) up to 36 months total.

The candidate will be required to pursue their research and their PhD program at the University of Gdańsk (Poland) under the supervision of prof. Rafal Urbaniak within the research project titled Conceptual, formal and practical aspects of forensic and judicial applications of probabilistic tools funded by the Polish National Science Centre. No knowledge of Polish is required to complete the PhD.

Applicants should hold an MA in philosophy or in another relevant discipline (law, AI, statistics, cognitive science, criminology, etc.), and they should be familiar with Bayesian epistemology and formal methods in philosophy in general; additional competences and experience related to the topic of the research will be an asset.

Doctoral students joining the doctoral programme will also be required to follow the PhD curriculum at the Institute, and may be required to fulfil some administrative or teaching duties (they will not require any knowledge of Polish).
